An Analysis of the Quality and Quantity of Estate Records in Burdur Shariyye Registers [1846-1855]
Abstract
In Ottoman historical research, estate records in shariyye registers contain valuable information on a range of topics, including social, cultural, and economic matters. This provides access to helpful information regarding family, inheritance, wealth accumulation, and material cultural aspects. This study analyzed the quality and quantity of estate records belonging to 58 individuals who died while residents of Burdur district between 1846 and 1855. The identities of the estate owners, including their gender (female and male), religious affiliation (Muslim and non-Muslim), marital status (married and single), residential status (neighborhood and village), occupation (tradesman, farmer, and merchant), and wealth, were determined. The study, which also provides information on the administrative structure of Burdur, finds that a significant number of estate owners were residents of Burdur, predominantly Muslim, male, and engaged in trades, farming, and merchant activities. The net value of most estates was less than 10,000 kuruş. It also shows that a significant number of estates were divided among heirs. In contrast, estates with no heirs were seized in the name of the beytülmâl (state estate), and the kadi / nâib was influential in determining and distributing the estates.
