The Other Neighbourhood: Music Culture of Gypsies in Dinar Dere Quarter
Abstract
Gypsies maintain nomadic, semi-nomadic and permanent life in almost every region of Turkey. However, it can’t be said that adequate sociological studies have been conducted on Gypsies and not sufficient research has been conducted on Gypsy music culture on socio-psychological level. Especially lack of interest of those dealing with music science is remarkable. Sealed life-style preference of Gypsies has an effect in this. Appearing different from the mainstream with their peculiar life-styles, life-perspectives, beliefs and perceptions, Gypsies occupy an active role in almost every music branch, especially in popular music.
The aim of this study is to review the musical life and to study the music culture of Gypsies living in Dinar, where the first music contest of the world was held. The study was limited to the Gypsies in Dere/Tekke quarter of Dinar district. Such methods and techniques of field research as in situ observation, interview and content analysis were used in the study, the findings were analysed and interpreted according to qualitative research methods and techniques. It is projected that this authentic study will yield a resource for those studying such fields as music and sociology, music and socio-psychology, culture and Gypsy music.
