The Effect of Listening Preparatory Works on Understanding Listening

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effect of the activities that would be applied to the sixth graders in elementary school in Turkish lessons before the listening activities (preparatory works)  on students’ listening skills and opinions about it. In the experimental group, physical and mental preparation stages were followed and the lesson was processed; in the control group, the lesson was passed without any preparation. Multiple choice, gap filling, paired and short answer questions were asked to measure the effect of the preparation work on the student. The data collected from this study were entered to SPSS and 11 points of difference between the average of the control group (25.3684) and the average of the experimental group (36.2857)  was found according to the results of the Independent Groups t-Test. On this meaningful difference in favor of the experimental group, a semi-structured interview form was applied to experimental group students and revealed the causes of the difference. Again, according to the form, all the students in the experimental group gave the answer "Yes" in response to the five "Yes" and "No" questions that were asked to provide positive contributions to the steps taken in listening preparation. According to these results, it is shown that the preparatory work influences the academic achievement of experimental group in a meaningful way.
