Abstract
Education the most emphasized field of reform during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. During this period the schools that were opened earlier were expanded while new educational institutions were also put into operation. Within the framework of the reforms, on the one hand efforts were spent to increase the number of educational institutions and on the other hand development of their education programs were underlined. In the development of the curricula, the courses that would ensure the religious and moral development of the society were considered together with positive science courses.
In this context, the curriculum applied in Islamic schools in order to reinforce religious belief was assessed by a commission formed under the presidency of sheikh al-Islam, at the order of Sultan Abdülhamid II. The report prepared as a result of the assessment was presented to Sultan Abdülhamid II.
In this study, this report, the desired changes in educational institutions and the curricula prepared for various schools were discussed. How the changes and curricula recommended in the report were received and whether they were implemented were assessed.
