The Effect of Paper Type in Electrophotographic Printing on RGB Color Accuracy in Graphic Design Application

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of paper type on RGB color accuracy in graphic design applications using perceptual color measurement parameters. Red, green, and blue (RGB) color samples printed on different paper types using electrophotographic printing were measured, and the obtained data were evaluated within the CIELAB color space framework. Color accuracy was analyzed by jointly considering CIEDE2000 color difference (ΔE*00), hue angle and hue shift (Δh°), chroma, optical density (ISO), and metamerism index parameters. The findings indicate that paper type significantly influences RGB color accuracy not only in terms of color difference but also with respect to color direction, saturation, and perceptual stability. The results reveal that sample N1 exhibited the closest perceptual performance to the reference paper, characterized by low ΔE*00 values, limited hue shifts, and high chroma values. In contrast, sample N3 showed the weakest color accuracy performance, with higher color differences and more pronounced hue shifts. Samples N5 and N7 demonstrated moderate perceptual color performance. Overall, this study highlights that paper selection in graphic design and digital printing applications should not be based solely on physical properties but should also incorporate a comprehensive evaluation of perceptual color parameters.
