Current Issues and Bilateral Disputes in the Arctic Region

Abstract

In recent years, especially as a result of the apparent melting of glaciers, the Arctic Region has started to draw attention to its international status and sovereignty areas. With its underground resources and newly formed transportation routes, the region, which will play a dominant role in the field of energy along with maritime trade routes, is actually home to more complex interest relations beyond what is known. The region has dozens of small islands apart from the coastal America, Russia, Norway, Canada and Greenland. The sovereignty struggles emerging on the basis of the islands have a significant impact on the foreign policies of the countries on the coast. This study explains the security and energy aspects of the Arctic Region, as well as current problems in the center of the islands.

Arktik Bölgesinde Yaşanan Güncel Sorunlar ve İkili Anlaşmazlıklar

Abstract

Son yıllarda özellikle buzulların gözle görülür biçimde erimesi sonucunda Kuzey Kutup Bölgesi uluslararası statü ve egemenlik alanları konusunda dikkat çekmeye başlamıştır. Sahip olduğu yer altı kaynakları ve yeni oluşan ulaşım yolları ile yakın gelecekte deniz ticaret yollarıyla birlikte enerji alanında da başat rol üstlenecek olan bölge aslında bilinenin ötesinde daha karmaşık çıkar ilişkilerine de ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Bölge, kıyısı olan Amerika, Rusya, Norveç, Kanada ve Grönland dışında onlarca küçük adaya sahiptir. Adalar temelinde ortaya çıkan egemenlik mücadelesi kıyısı olan ülkelerin dış politikalarını da önemli şekilde etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmada Arktik Bölgesi’nin güvenlik ve enerji boyutunun yanı sıra adalar merkezinde oluşan güncel sorunlar ele alınmıştır.
