GELENEKSEL OXFORD EVLERİ

Year 2024, Volume: 8 Issue: 3, 149 - 168, 31.12.2024

Abstract

TRADITIONAL OXFORD HOUSES

Year 2024, Volume: 8 Issue: 3, 149 - 168, 31.12.2024

Abstract

The architecture of English homes began with the construction of Christian churches and came under the influence of Norman architecture with the Norman conquest. English Gothic architecture then emerged between the 12th and 16th centuries, followed by the popularity of Tudor Architecture in the 16th century. The Civil War of 1615 and the Industrial Revolution brought about the prominence of Georgian-style structures. Subsequently, the Victorian architectural movement emerged. Although English architecture has undergone many changes over time, it has achieved significant success in sustainable environmental control through features such as the use of natural resources, local materials, and local construction techniques.
This study examines the general characteristics of different architectural movements in traditional English homes, focusing specifically on studies of traditional Oxford homes. These studies have examined the architectural typologies, facade materials, facade movements, interior layouts, and gardens of Oxford homes. They have also analyzed the floor plans of families living under different economic conditions and their approaches to facade design in architecture.
Traditional English homes have been designed in harmony with nature, taking into account the influence of physical conditions, maximizing sunlight exposure, and ensuring thermal comfort. These homes are typically constructed from stone and made using local materials. Thermal comfort and functionality are also prioritized in the arrangement of interior spaces. Sustainable natural materials have been used in the selection of building materials, with many examples still in existence today.
