Human and Nature, Harmony or Rejection

Abstract

In the present study, following through time a certain theme was attempted to see how the representation changed during different points in history. A single subject, the image of Saint Sebastian as an iconic recognizable character was chosen to follow through time. His body full of arrows and wounds tied against a tree or a pillar was immediately recognized, no matter what historical period the image belonged to. The position of humans towards life and divinity only by following this character and its changing appearance will be identified in the study. Saint Sebastian is an iconic image for human power and determination against injustice, a symbol of resistance, as he recovered after being shot with arrows and continued to stay for his believes. Many contemporary artists dedicated works to this important eloquent figure. Saint Sebastian can be seen as a symbol of human unfounded cruelty against peers, questioning the lack of justice or empathy that characterizes our species sometimes.
