The nineteenth century formed a significant period in the history of Chinese Turkestan in more than one respect. The country
witnessed a series of uprisings and several changes of government. Absence of proper means of communication and the intervention
of the vast Takla Makan desert between the province and the rest of China acted as impetus to the more rapid development of Xinjiang's
overland trade with Russia and India than with China.
