Abstract

Year 2017, Issue: 45, 25 - 44, 14.12.2017

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between participants’ reported self-disclosure form, perceived level of interaction anxiety and not being a user of Facebook. Being most commonly used online network in the world, Facebook has been chosen to be examined. In this study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were held with 13 participants (7 college or high-school students and 6 post graduates who aged between 18 and 37). The data were examined using thematic analysis method. According to the findings, Facebook non-users think that Facebook violates people’s privacy and consider Facebook as an exhibition stage for Facebook users. The participants value face-to-face communication more, they do not see online communication and its relationship structure as intimate. The results revealed that they generally disclose themselves easily within relationships they have and they do not experience a high degree of interaction anxiety which can affect their daily life. The results of the study were discussed in relation to the degree of satisfaction of the participants with their social network relationships and communication styles, and their preference of not using online social networks.
