Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığının Bir Belirleyicisi Olarak Öz Saygı: Konya Örneğinde Bir Araştırma

Abstract

Sosyal medya ve sosyal ağ siteleri, günümüz dünyasında insanların zihin ve eylem
dünyasında neredeyse vazgeçilmez bir statüde bulunan iletişim ve kitle iletişimi ortamları
olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. Sosyal medyanın insanlığın hayatına girmesinden bu yana
çeşitli kuruluşlar (örn. We Are Social, Digital Report 2019) tarafından her yıl düzenli olarak
yapılan çalışmalarda elde edilen istatistikler de bu durumu teşhis ve teyit eden bulguları gün
yüzüne çıkarmaktadır. Bunun da ötesinde iletişim tarihi bağlamında âdeta sosyal medya çağı
olarak nitelendirilebilecek bir döneme işaret eden bu iletişim ortamları, aşırı kullanılması
durumunda vazgeçilmezlik konumunu da aşarak her yaş grubundan birçok birey açısından
patolojik anlamda bir bağımlılığın oluşmasına kolaylıkla zemin hazırlayabilmektedir1. Bu
bağlamda bu denli yaygın ve hassasiyet taşıyan bir konu olan sosyal medya bağımlılığıyla
ilgili değişkenlerin araştırılması da akademik boyutunun ötesinde toplumsal bir katma
değer üretme imkânı taşımaktadır. Bu temel motivasyondan hareketle bu çalışma
kapsamında da Konya kent merkezi örneğinde 18-60 yaş arası yetişkinlerin özellikle sosyal
medya bağımlılığı ve öz saygıları arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanılmıştır. Saha araştırması ile
gerçekleştirilen çalışmada ilgili literatürdeki standart ölçeklerin de yer aldığı anket formu
400 kişiye yüz yüze uygulanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda öz saygı düzeyinin sosyal medya
bağımlılık puanını negatif yönde anlamlı biçimde yordadığı bulgulanmıştır. Buna göre
katılımcıların öz saygı düzeyi azaldıkça sosyal medya bağımlılıkları artış göstermektedir.

Self-Esteem as a Predictor of Social Media Addiction: A Case Study in Konya

Abstract

Social media and social networking sites come to the forefront in the world of communication and mass media, which are almost indispensable in people’s mind and action world. Since the introduction of social media into the life of mankind, statistics from studies conducted by various organizations (example, We Are Social, Digital Report 2019) on a regular basis every year reveal the findings that confirm and confirm this situation. Moreover, in the context of the history of communication, these communication environments, which point to a period that can be considered as a social media age, can easily overcome the indispensable position in case of overuse and can easily lay the groundwork for a pathological dependence on many individuals of every age group. In this context, researching the variables related to social media addiction, which is such a common and sensitive issue, has the possibility of producing a social added value beyond its academic dimension. Based on this basic motivation, this study focused on the relationship between the social media addiction and self-esteem of adults between the ages of 18 and 60 in the example of Konya city center. The questionnaire, which included standard scales in the literature, was applied to 400 people face to face. As a result of the study, it was found that self-esteem significantly predicted social media addiction score in a negative way. Accordingly, as the level of self-esteem of the participants diminishes, social media dependencies are increasing
