Knowledge and Practices of Nurses Regarding Peripheral Intravenous Catheterization

Abstract

Objective: This research was conducted to determine the knowledge levels, the factors affecting it and their practices of nurses regarding peripheral intravenous catheterization. Material and Method: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out between March and December 2022, with 401 nurses who working in 28 public and 2 university hospitals using the "Sociodemographic Form" and the "Status Detection Form for Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Application" within the İzmir province, Turkey. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and ANOVA were used for data analysis. The significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: The mean knowledge score of the nurses regarding peripheral intravenous catheterization was 13.19±2.39. It was determined that 83.8% of the nurses received training on peripheral intravenous catheterization, 57.9% followed the current guidelines. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of knowledge about peripheral intravenous catheterization according to the nurses' gender, educational background, working position and clinic, educational status, and adherence to current guidelines (p<0.05). The knowledge levels of the nurses about "providing hand hygiene," "positioning the patient," "checking the vascular access immediately after the application," and "informing the patient about the procedure" were at the highest level and the lowest level of knowledge was related "the type of solution used for skin antisepsis," "the frequency of catheter care," and "the angle of progression in the vein during catheterization," respectively. Conclusion: This study concludes that the knowledge level of nurses regarding peripheral intravenous catheterization is at a moderate level. It was concluded that the nurses were not consistently following the current guidelines and had misapplications in the catheterization procedure.

Hemşirelerin Periferik İntravenöz Kateter Uygulamasına İlişkin Bilgi Düzeyleri ve Uygulamaları

Abstract

Amaç: Bu araştırma, hemşirelerin periferik intravenöz kateter uygulamasına ilişkin bilgi düzeylerini, etkileyen faktörleri ve uygulamalarını belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel ve tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma, Mart-Aralık 2022 tarihleri arasında İzmir ili sınırlarındaki T.C. Sağlık Bakanlığına bağlı 28 kamu ve 2 üniversite hastanesinde çalışan 401 hemşire ile “Sosyodemografik Form” ve “Periferik İntravenöz Kateter Uygulamaya İlişkin Durum Tespit Formu” kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler ve bağımsız grupların karşılaştırılmasında t testi ve ANOVA kullanılmıştır. Anlamlılık p<0,05 düzeyinde kabul edilmiştir. Bulgular: Hemşirelerin periferik intravenöz kateter uygulamasına ilişkin bilgi puanı ortalaması 13,19±2,39 bulunmuştur. Hemşirelerin %83,8’inin periferik intravenöz kateter uygulamaya ilişkin eğitim aldığı, %57,9’unun güncel rehberleri takip ettiği belirlenmiştir. Hemşirelerin cinsiyet, mezun olunan okul, çalışma pozisyonu ve çalışılan klinik, eğitim alma durumu ve güncel rehberleri takip etme durumlarına göre periferik intravenöz kateter uygulamasına ilişkin bilgi puan ortalamaları arasında istatistiksel anlamlılık saptanmıştır (p<0,05). Hemşirelerin sırasıyla “el hijyenini sağlama”, “hastaya pozisyon verme” ile “uygulamadan hemen sonra damar yolu açıklığını kontrol etme” ve “uygulama öncesinde hastayı işlem hakkında bilgilendirme” basamakları hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri en yüksek düzeyde iken en düşük bilgi düzeyi “cilt antisepsisi sağlamada kullanılan solüsyon türü”, “kateter bakımı uygulama sıklığı” ve “uygulama esnasında vende ilerleme açısı” ile ilgilidir. Sonuç: Çalışmamızda hemşirelerin periferik intravenöz kateter uygulamasına ilişkin bilgi düzeylerinin orta seviyede olduğu, güncel rehberleri takip etmedikleri ve kateterizasyon işlemine ilişkin yanlış uygulamalarının mevcut olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
