Abstract

The Role of Nordic Walking in Physiotherapy in the Management of Chronic Diseases and Rehabilitation Processes: A Traditional Review

Year 2026, Volume: 11 Issue: 1, 199 - 204, 28.01.2026

Abstract

Nordic walking is a type of aerobic exercise performed with specially designed poles. This exercise increases walking efficiency by providing active use of the upper extremity muscles. Its most important advantages are that it is easy to apply, low-cost and simple. It also provides an ideal exercise option for individuals with low exercise tolerance by increasing energy consumption and decreasing perceived effort. The aim of this study is to examine the role of Nordic walking in physiotherapy in the management of chronic diseases and rehabilitation processes. When the literature is examined, it was seen that Nordic walking is an effective exercise method widely used in different rehabilitation areas such as neurological, oncological, geriatric and women's health. It was effective in the management of diseases with its effects such as increasing physical capacity, improving balance and contributing to pain control. In addition to increasing cardiovascular endurance, it was determined that it improves metabolic health, increases muscle strength, improves aerobic capacity and increases psychological well-being. As a result, Nordic walking is a safe, easy-to-apply and effective rehabilitation method in different patient groups. The multifaceted contributions it offers to physical and psychological health are increasing the importance of Nordic walking in different rehabilitation areas. Thanks to these features, it can be used more widely in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation in the future. In addition, methodologically strong and high- quality studies should be conducted to evaluate the effects of Nordic walking more comprehensively.
