Attitudes of Health Professional Parents Towards Childhood Vaccination

Abstract

Objective: Attitudes of health professionals towards vaccines can affect the attitudes of society towards vaccination. Therefore, they play a crucial role in the success of immunisation programmes. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of health professional parents towards childhood vaccines. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used in the study. The sample included 169 health professionals. Data were collected online using an Introductory Information Form and the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) Questionnaire, which was created by the researchers. Results: Our study, vaccine hesitancy regarding childhood immunisations was determined as 10.7% among health professional parents. Among these professionals, 16% reported hesitancy towards vaccines in general while 1.8% expressed opposition to vaccination. The primary reason for vaccine hesitancy was a lack of confidence. Vaccine hesitancy was found to be high among health professionals who were high school graduates and those with low economic status. Conversely, it was found to be low among those who used scientific publications as a source of information, held at least a master’s degree, and had a high economic status. Conclusion: Directing health professionals to accurate sources of information on vaccines can reduce vaccine hesitancy, especially among people with low education levels. It is thought that confidence problems, which are the primary cause of vaccine hesitancy, can be alleviated by providing reliable information about vaccine production technologies and contents
