Breastfeeding and Neonatal Health During COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The new coronavirus, named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization, has taken the whole world under its influence in a short time. It is a rapidly spreading infectious disease and is transmitted by contact and respiratory droplets. There are many risky groups regarding COVID-19. Pregnant women and newborns have an important place among these groups. Antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum processes of mothers diagnosed with COVID-19 may also cause anxiety in individuals in terms of mother-infant health. Although there are few resources available on whether COVID-19 is transmitted from mother to baby transplacentally, it is thought that it can be transmitted via respiratory droplets during breastfeeding and when the necessary precautions are not taken. In addition, the feeding and breastfeeding process of the newborn has become a debated issue in this process. When the recommendations from many health institutions are examined, breastfeeding is recommended in this process. Addressing the maternal and infant health frequently during the pandemic process, guiding infected mothers in their birth processes via training and counseling by nurses, providing consultancy and support where necessary, protecting, maintaining, and improving newborn health via quality care will help minimizing the negative effects of the pandemic on maternal and infant health and preventing possible complications. The purpose of the present review is to present information on newborn health, newborn nutrition, and breastfeeding processes during the COVID-19 pandemic process.

COVID-19 Pandemi Sürecinde Neonatal Sağlık ve Anne Sütü ile Beslenme

Abstract

Dünya Sağlık Örgütü tarafından COVID-19 olarak adlandırılan yeni koronavirüs, kısa bir sürede tüm dünyayı etkisi altına almıştır. Hızla yayılan bulaşıcı bir hastalık olup temas ve solunum damlacıkları ile bulaşmaktadır. COVID-19 açısından pek çok riskli grup vardır. Gebeler ve yenidoğanlar bu gruplar içerisinde önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. COVID-19 tanılı annelerin antenatal, intrapartum ve postpartum süreçleri de anne-bebek sağlığı açısından bireylerde endişe yaratabilmektedir. COVID-19’un transplasental olarak anneden bebeğe geçip geçmediğine dair mevcut kaynaklar az olmakla birlikte, emzirme sırasında ve gerekli önlemler alınmadığında solunum damlacıkları ile geçebileceği düşünülmektedir. Ayrıca bu süreçte yenidoğanın beslenmesi ve emzirme süreci de tartışılır bir konu haline gelmiştir. Pek çok sağlık kuruluşunun önerileri incelendiğinde bu süreçte anne sütü ile beslenme önerilmektedir. Pandemi sürecinde anne bebek sağlığının sıkça ele alınması, hemşireler tarafından verilecek eğitim ve danışmanlıklar ile enfekte annelere doğum süreçlerinde rehberlik edilmesi, gerekli noktalarda danışmanlık ve destek sağlanması, nitelikli bakımlar ile yenidoğan sağlığının korunması, sürdürülmesi ve geliştirilmesi pandeminin anne-bebek sağlığı üzerine olumsuz etkilerinin en aza indirilmesine ve olası komplikasyonların önlenmesine yardımcı olacaktır. Bu derlemenin amacı, COVID-19 pandemi sürecinde anne-bebek sağlığı, yenidoğan beslenmesi ve emzirme süreçlerine dair bilgilerin sunulmasıdır.
