Fizyoterapi ve Rehabilitasyonun Mesleki Gelişim Tarihçesi

        Fizyoterapistlerin, mesleğin tarihçesini ve ilk günlerden beri toplum sağlığına olan katkılarını bilmeleri, mesleğin bundan sonraki hedeflerini belirlemeleri açısından oldukça önemlidir. Fizyoterapinin mesleki tarihçesi oldukça eskilere dayanmasına rağmen, modern anlamdaki tarihçe 19. yüzyılda İngiltere ve Amerika’da başlamıştır. Bu yüzyılın başında gelişen polimyelit epidemisi ve 1. Dünya Savaşı, modern fizyoterapi mesleğinin başlamasını sağlayan önemli nedenler olmuş ve mesleğin gelişimi ortopedistlerin yardımı ile gerçekleşmiştir. 19. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru teknolojinin gelişimi ve küresel ölçekteki etkileri sonucu, fizyoterapi alanındaki gelişmeler hızlanmıştır. Klinik uygulamalarda ortaya çıkan gelişimi, meslekte özelleşme, kanıta dayalı bilimsel çalışmalar ve akademik yapılanmalar takip etmiştir. Günümüzde fizyoterapistler, 112 üye ülke ve 360.000’den fazla üyesi olan Dünya Fizyoterapi Konfederasyonu (WCPT)

çatısı altında toplanmıştır. WCPT bünyesinde, fizyoterapide farklı özelleşme alanlarını gösteren 12 dünya derneği bulunmaktadır. Bugün fizyoterapistlerin, bir çok ülkedeki eğitim seviyesi, bilimsel yeterlilikleri, mesleki yetki ve sorumlulukları oldukça yüksektir ve yükselmeye devam etmektedir.

Professional Development History of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

 

Abstract (≤250 WORDS)

Knowing the professional history of the physical therapists and their contributions to the public health from the very begining of this history is very important in establishing their professional targets. Modern physical therapy has begun in the 19th century in USA and UK, although based on the professional history of physical therapy is quite old. Polio outbreak and First World War at the early part of the 19th century have been the most important reasons for initiating the professional physiotherapy and the development of the physical therapy has been established with the help of orthopedic surgeons. Towards the end of the 19th century, develeopment of the physical therapy profession has got rapid advances due to explosion of technology and events that had an effect on a global scale. Development in clinical practice has been followed by professional specialization in physical therapy, evidence-based scientific researches and academic degrees. Currently, physical therapists are gathered under the roof of World Confederation Physical Therapy (WCPT) which has 112 member countries and more than 360,000 members all over the world. WCPT involves 12 world associations representing various specialitization fields in physical therapy. Nowadays, education in many countries and professional scientific qualifications, powers and responsibilities of the physical therapists are very high and continuing to rise.
