ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz's Relations with Ahl al-Bayt and His Supporters

Abstract

The Umayyads and the Hashemites, the two most influential forces of the Islamic society, considered each other as rivals and enemies in the struggle for power after the events that left deep traces in the minds such as the martyrdom of ʿOt̲h̲mān, Muʿāwiya’s refusal of allegiance to Ali and the Battle of Siffin. Since the Umayyad caliphs saw the Hashemites as their only rival, they kept them under constant surveillance. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, on the other hand, followed a different policy than his predecessors, and tried to provide social peace by giving priority to aid and relations to the Ahl al-Bayt. His different Ahl al-Bayt politics is an important issue that is still up to date today. However, an independent detailed study has not been carried out in this area and some related studies have included only a few pages on the subject. For these reasons, we believe that this article, which deals with the relations of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz with the Ahl al-bayt, will fill an important gap in political history and Umayyad - Ehl-i beyt relations. This research deals with Omar’s relations with the Ahl al-Bayt and his supporters within the scope of the governorship, the caliphate undersecretary and the caliphate and aims to reveal in detail the different politics he followed against the members and supporters of the Ahl al-Bayt. In order to determine his Ahl al-Bayt policy in detail, different basic sources were taken as a basis, while contemporary studies were also benefited from. In the evaluations, the situation has been tried to be determined within scientific limits, avoiding idealization and it has been tried to adhere to the analytical and critical method. In the context of his different actions, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz not only treated the members of the Ahl al-bayt well during his governorship, but also ensured that some of the Prophet’s heritage (sadukât) was given to Zayd b. Hasan. During his caliphate period, he abolished the custom of insulting Ali within the scope of reconciling the opposition with the state, then gave Katiba and Fadak to the Ahl al-Bayt and distributed the relative share and one-fifth share to them. Likewise, he returned some of the confiscated properties of the Ahl al-bayt to them and also gave them priority in financial aid and relations. However, he opposed the caliphate claims of some Ahl al-Bayt supporters based on the understanding of the qaim imam and ric‘at. While most of the members of the Ahl al-Bayt who lived in his time thanked him, today’s Imami Shiites regard ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz as usurper and illegitimate like other caliphs and believe that he will go to Hell.
