Sustainability in the Spotlight: Insights from Turkish Banks' Sustainability Communication Campaigns

Abstract

This article explores the sustainability communication strategies of seven central Turkish banks in the finance sector. These banks are respectively: Akbank, Garanti BBVA, ING Bank, İşbank, Şekerbank, TSKB, and Yapı Kredi. These banks compose approximately 72 percent of Turkey's private banking sector. Not only that, but these banks are also signatories to the UN Global Compact. They have made a commitment for integrating environmental and social considerations into their appraisal processes as signatories of the Global Compact Network Turkey Declaration on Sustainable Finance. These findings illustrate that sustainable advertising and communication campaigns of these banks across various platforms, especially on YouTube. The banks’ communication campaigns on their official YouTube accounts have been analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The research's key findings highlight several different focuses across different banks' marketing communications, such as renewable energy, green loans, sustainable agriculture, sustainable economy, etc., with varying degrees of community and social engagement. The paper compares these different sustainability approaches to worldwide standards, identifying advantages and possibilities for growth in sustainable communication in the finance sector. These findings have substantial implications regarding enhancing sustainability communication initiatives in the country's banking sector.
