Youth in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Phenomenological Study on Synthetic Media Content and Critical Literacy

Year 2025, Issue: Yeni Medya Çalışmaları, 315 - 350, 28.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.53791/imgelem.1732361

Abstract

The proliferation of synthetic media produced by artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming the digital information ecosystem, presenting new opportunities and challenges, especially for Generation Z, the most intensive users of these technologies. This study aims to gain a deep phenomenological understanding of the lived experiences of young participants from Generation Z in Turkey with synthetic media, their perceptions of this content, their information verification strategies, and their critical literacy practices. The study proposes an original theoretical framework that integrates the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explain the adoption of AI tools, Critical Media Literacy (CML) to analyze the evaluation of content produced by these tools, and Phenomenology to capture the lived experience of this entire process. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with 22 young people aged 18-24 studying at Harran University. The findings reveal that while young people adopt AI tools due to their perceived usefulness and ease of use, the subsequent exposure to manipulative content leads to profound affective responses, such as “epistemic anxiety” and a “doppelgänger fear,” perceived as a threat to their digital selves. Participants’ verification practices emerge as informal “digital self-preservation” strategies developed in response to these anxieties. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the inadequacy of individual coping strategies generates a strong collective demand for the integration of media literacy education into the curriculum and for holding platforms accountable through legal regulations.

Yapay Zekâ Çağında Gençlik: Sentetik Medya İçerikleri ve Eleştirel Okuryazarlık Üzerine Fenomenolojik Bir İnceleme
