Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between nursing students’ self-compassion and their attitudes towards organ donation. This descriptive study has been performed with 332 students in the nursing faculty of a public university in Istanbul between October and November 2019. “Individual Information Form”, “Self-Compassion Scale” and “Organ Donation Attitude Scale” have been used in the collection of data. Data has been analyzed with descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman’s correlation coefficient. The mean age of the participants is 20.16 ± 1.45 years and 82.5% of them are female. The mean score of positive attitude towards organ donation of nursing students is 98,23±17,09, the mean score of negative attitude is 49,70±17,96 and the mean score of self-compassion is 3,28±0,50. A statistically significant difference has been detected between self-compassion (p=0.035), negative attitude towards organ donation (p=0.003), and fear of medical neglect (p<0.001) with the gender. Also, statistically significant difference has been determined between self-compassion (p=0.003), negative attitude towards organ donation (p<0.001), fear of medical neglect (p=0.001) and fear of bodily mutilation (p<0.001) with class level. A very weak negative correlation has been detected between self-compassion and negative attitude towards organ donation (r=-0,139, p=0.011), and fear of medical neglect (r=-0,176, p=0.001). According to these results, nursing students have been determined to have moderate self-compassion, high positive attitudes and low negative attitudes towards organ donation. As self-compassions of the students increases, negative attitudes towards organ donation and fear of medical neglect decrease.
