The research has been carried out to determine the women’s level of anxiety and the affecting factors, before gynecological examination. The descriptive and cross-sectional planned study has been conducted with 250 women who applied to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic of a university hospital. The data has been collected using a questionnaire form, prepared by the researchers, which included the socio-demographic variables and gynecological information of the women, and the Beck Anxiety Scale which is used to determine anxiety levels. Of the women included in the research, it has been determined that 68.4% had low anxiety, 20.7% had moderate and 10.9% had high level of anxiety. It has been determined that; 81.3% of the women had gynecological examination before, the causes of anxiety were mostly the exposure of the private area (28.7%) and the fear of the emergence of a gynecological disease after the examination (22.7%). Anxiety mean scores of those who stated the reason of experiencing anxiety before the gynecological examination (19.52 ± 9.84) as pain and suffering have been found to be significantly higher than other groups (F = 2.331, p = 0.043) (p <0.05). As the result of this study, it has been determined that women experienced “moderate” anxiety before gynecological examination. The women to have a positive experience with the supportive nursing / midwifery approach during the gynecological examination is of great importance.
