DİŞ HEKİMLİĞİ FAKÜLTESİ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN EMPATİ DÜZEYLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Abstract

Çalışmanın amacı diş hekimliği fakültesi öğrencilerinin empati düzeylerini çeşitli demografik değişikliklere göre değerlendirmektedir. Çalışmaya Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesinde eğitim gören 435 öğrenci dahil edilmiştir. Öğrencilerden; demografik bilgilerinin ve Jefferson Doktor Empati Ölçeği Öğrenci Versiyonu (JSPE-S) sorularının olduğu anketi doldurmaları istenmiştir. İstatistiksel analizler için SPSS 25.0 paket programı kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi için Mann-Whitney U testi ve Kruskal-Wallis testi kullanılmıştır (p<0.05). Empati puan ortalaması en yüksek sınıf 3. sınıflar, en düşük sınıf ise 5.sınıflardır. Empati puan ortalamaları açısından; 5.ve 4. sınıflar (p=0.021), 5. ve 3. sınıflar (p=0.003), 1.ve 3. sınıflar (p=0.011) arasındaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. Kız öğrenciler ile erkek öğrencilerin empati puan ortalamaları arasındaki fark da istatistiksel olarak anlamlıdır (p=0.022). Diş hekimliği öğrencileri ile hastalar arasında daha sağlıklı iletişimlerin kurulabilmesi için empati duygularının geliştirilmesi önemlidir ve eğitim müfredatına dahil edilmesinin fayda sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.

Evaluation of Empathy Levels of Faculty of Dental Students

Abstract

The study aims to evaluate the empathy levels of Faculty of Dental Students according to various demographic factors. The study included 435 students studying at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Faculty of Dentistry. Students were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing demographic information and Jefferson Doctor Empathy Scale Student Version (JSPE-S) questions. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS 25.0 package program. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for data analysis (p<0.05). The highest mean empathy score was in the 3rd grade and the lowest in the 5th grade. The difference between 5th and 4th grades (p=0.021), 5th and 3rd grades (p=0.003), and 1st and 3rd grades (p=0.011) in terms of mean empathy scores was statistically significant. The difference in empathy scores between female and male students is statistically significant (p=0.022). Improving empathy skills is essential for fostering healthier communication between dentistry students and patients and it is believed that its inclusion in the curriculum would be beneficial.
