The Semantic Analysis of the Words "Leisure" and "Free" in the Context of Recreation

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the semantic and etymological meanings of the concepts of leisure and free time used in the context of recreation in the Turkish language. In this study, by considering the etymological origins of the words, the terms "leisure" (boş) and "free" (serbest), which have been used with different meanings from past to present, are evaluated philosophically, linguistically, and logically. According to the findings, when the word "leisure" (boş) is used in its basic sense (as the opposite of "full") in the context of time, it indicates that time can be utilized uniquely by individuals, referring to a period that can be filled or evaluated during daily life. It is concluded that the negative connotations of the metaphorical use of the word "leisure" (boş) do not align with its literal (concrete) meaning. The word "free" (serbest), in the context of free time, is found to refer to the time when individuals are liberated from work obligations and exempt from daily constraints (work-commute-worship). Additionally, it is determined that the word "free" (serbest) has a singular meaning, denoting freedom and exemption, whereas the word "leisure" (boş) experiences multiple shifts in meaning, with its primary use signifying the opposite of "full."

Rekreasyon Bağlamında Boş ve Serbest Kelimelerinin Semantik Analizi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı rekreasyon bağlamında kullanılan boş zaman (leisure) ve serbest zaman (free time) kavramlarının Türk Dilindeki anlam karşılıklarını semantik ve etimolojik olarak analiz etmendir. Bu Çalışmada kelimelerin etimolojik kökenlerini baz alınarak, geçmişten günümüze farklı anlamlarda kullanılan boş ve serbest kelimeleri felsefi, dilbilimsel ve mantıksal olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, ‘‘boş’’ kelimesi zaman bağlamında temel anlamıyla (dolu karşıtı) kullanıldığında zamanın kişiye özgün kullanılabileceği, günlük zamandaki doldurulabilen, değerlendirilebilen zaman dilimini ifade ettiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Mecaz anlamıyla kullanılan ‘‘boş’’ kelimesinin yarattığı negatif anlamların gerçek (somut) anlamına uygun olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. ‘‘Serbest’’ kelimesi ise serbest zaman bağlamında bireyin çalışmaya bağımlı olduğu zamandan özgürlüğüne ithaf edildiği ve günlük zaman dilimindeki bağlayıcılardan (iş-ulaşım-ibadet) muaf olunan zaman dilimini kastettiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ek olarak serbest kelimesinin tek anlam ifade ederek özgürlüğü ve muafiyeti belirttiği, boş kelimesinin ise birden fazla anlam kaymalarına uğradığı, temel anlamıyla kullanımının dolu karşıtı olarak belirtildiği bulunmuştur.
