FRENCH GLOTON COMPANY IN ISTANBUL TRADE (1610-1620)

Abstract

Gloton company, which was headquartered in Toulouse in the Languedoc province of France, was one of the exceptional organizations that contributed to the kingdom’s economy at the beginning of 17th century. Its founder Pierre Gloton developed the international wholesale trade activities in the Mediterranean basin with the help of partnerships and managed to create one of the most successful French companies of the period. The boutique fabric store in Toulouse was transformed into a business organization as the company kept establishing cooperations with numerous fabric manufacturers in the kingdom, and Gloton eventually reached the position of a capitalist trader. The fact that the Gloton Company archive has been preserved until this day is very important to bring light to the historical studies on Levant at the beginning of 17th century, especially in scope of the Ottoman-French commercial relations. There is no literature study on what kind of commercial relationship was established by the company with Istanbul to meet the demands of the French and European markets. The purpose of this study is to reveal the company’s connections with Istanbul, the capital city of the Ottoman Empire, in scope of the textile trade. The study is mainly based on the company’s accounting books and the daily records from Marseilles branch. The company’s Istanbul activities cover 1610-1620 period in scope of these documents, therefore our study is limited to this time period. The study provides information on the shipments sent via ships including the various manufactured fabrics that were transported by Gloton company to Port of Istanbul as well as the raw materials, semi-finished and finished products which were transported from Istanbul to France, together with their market values.

İSTANBUL TİCARETİNDE FRANSIZ GLOTON ŞİRKETİ (1610-1620)

Abstract

Fransa’nın Languedoc eyaletindeki Toulouse merkezli Gloton Şirketi, 17. yüzyıl başlarında krallığının ekonomisine katkıda bulunan ender ticari işletmelerden bir tanesidir. Kurucusu Pierre Gloton, uluslararası toptancılık faaliyetlerini Akdeniz havzasında ortaklık yoluyla geliştirerek döneminin başarılı Fransız şirketlerinden biri olmuştur. Şirketin kraliyetteki birçok kumaş manüfaktürü ile iş birliği yapmasıyla Toulouse’daki butik kumaş mağazasını bir ticarethaneye dönüştüren Gloton, sermayeci-tüccar konumuna erişmiştir. Gloton Şirket arşivinin günümüze kadar korunmuş olması, 17. yüzyıl başlarına dair Levant tarihi araştırmalarına özellikle Osmanlı-Fransız ticari ilişkilerine ışık tutması açısından oldukça kıymetlidir. Şirketin hem Fransa hem de Avrupa piyasalarının talebini karşılamak için İstanbul ile nasıl bir ticari ilişki kurduğu hakkında literatürde yeteri kadar çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, şirketinin tekstil ticaretinde Osmanlı başkenti İstanbul ile olan bağlantılarını açıklığa kavuşturmaktır. Araştırmanın ana kaynağını, şirketin Marsilya’daki şubesine ait günlük kayıtlar ve hesap defterleri oluşturmaktadır. Söz konusu belgelerde şirketin İstanbul faaliyetleri 1610-1620 yılları arasını kapsadığından çalışma bu tarih aralığında sınırlandırılmıştır. Makalede, Gloton Şirketinin İstanbul Limanı’na getirdiği çeşitli manüfaktür kumaşlar, İstanbul’dan Fransa’ya götürdüğü ham mamuller ile yarı ve tam mamuller, bunların piyasa değerleri, gemiler üzerinden yapılan sevkiyatlar hakkında bilgiler verilmektedir.
