Abstract

Analysis of YoutubeTM Videos and Video Comments on Mathematical Proof Methods

Year 2024, , 437 - 460, 31.08.2024
https://doi.org/10.17679/inuefd.1378938

Abstract

Although there is an increasing interest in studies on distance education, digital technologies, and online learning environments in mathematics education with the COVID-19 process, there is still a great need for such studies in the literature. The aim of this research is to analyze the most viewed YouTubeTM videos on mathematical proof methods and the comments made on these videos. For this aim, a search was made by typing the keywords “matematiksel ispat yöntemleri” and “mathematical proof methods” in the YouTubeTM search engine, and eight videos with over a hundred thousand views were included in the scope of the research. These eight videos were analyzed both descriptively and in terms of content. For this, quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative descriptive analysis were used. Additionally, 1244 comments made on these eight videos were analyzed. For this, the sentiment analysis method was preferred. According to the findings and results of the research, the average number of views of eight videos on mathematical proof methods is 546203, the average view rate is 20976, the average duration is 21 minutes 42 seconds, and the average number of comments is 237. In addition, although the videos are not very rich in terms of content and not very differentiated from each other, the comments made on the videos mostly contain positive sentiments. It can be seen from the positive comments that such videos contain some useful elements for students’ proof learning. Based on this, it can be suggested that students’ needs for online mathematics learning media and quality mathematics content in these media should be considered in national and international contexts.
