Öz
As a result of the marine accident, caused by the cruise ship named COSTA CONCORDIA, a total of thirty-three people lost their lives, hundreds of people were injured and the ship became completely unusable. The magnitude of the COSTA CONCORDIA accident and its results required it to be evaluated in terms of maritime safety. In this study, firstly, the accident is explained in terms of the occurrence. Secondly, the problems related to maritime safety and the issues that could be described as violations within the scope of international regulations are established. Finally, it is dealt with Maritime Safety Committee (“MSC”) of the International Maritime Organization (“IMO”) which is a specialised agency of the United Nations and European Union’s works in relation to the matter are explained. In this study it has been found that, following COSTA CONCORDIA accident, the temporary measures for passenger ship’s owners have been established, the issues that may pose a problem related to accident have been added to the long-term action plan for maritime safety, and the amendments have been made to International Convention for the Safety Life at Sea, 1974 (“1974 SOLAS”) with the contribution of IMO-MSC. In addition, COSTA CONCORDIA accident has been attracted attention with its maritime safety aspect at the European Union and non-governmental organizations.
