School Administrators Opinions Regarding School Guidance and Psychological Counseling Services
Abstract
Purpose: School administrators have a variety of roles and tasks: Research and planning, organizing, guiding, monitoring, auditing and evaluation, communication and management are the most important roles and tasks. In accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation, the school principal manages the school together with other employees. Guidance and psychological counseling services that are applied to schools are indigenous to program of that school. The functionality of the program is based on the common understanding of school staff. A common understanding can be provided among school staff regarding guidance and psychological counseling services by managers. The purpose of this study is to determine the opinions of school administrators responsible for conducting guidance and psychological counseling services in primary, secondary and high school in Malatya. This study may contribute to the cooperation of school administrators and psychological counselor iron out the complexity of their roles, tasks and expectations.
Design & Methodology: For the sample of the study, 78 principals and 92 asistant principals (170 school administrators) working in primary, secondary and high schools in Battalgazi and Yeşilyurt provinces of Malatya province were determined by convenience sampling technique of random sampling methods and 28.7% of the universe was reached. In the analysis of data, descriptive analysis, for binary comparisons nonparametric tests Mann Whitney U, for multiple comparisons Kruskal Wallis hypothesis tests were used.
Findings: According to findings, school administrators stated that school guidance services cannot be carried out effectively by class and branch teachers, that psychological counselors should be constantly in the school unit, and that guidance services cannot be limited to educational seminars for students, parents and teachers. They pointed out that each school had a psychological counselor, a psychological counselor was the key to student identification, school management, a unit that provided communication between the parents and the teacher, interfered with the problems in the school, and played an active role in monitoring the development of the students. "I think that the guidance service at the school interfered with the problems in the school." administrators in primary and secondary schools stated that they attended and administrators who worked in high school stated that they did not participate.
Conclusion & Suggestions: It is not possible for these researches and results to be generalized to all schools. Therefore, testing of the results of the research with broader sample groups, especially with mixed methods, may be helpful in reaching further important details of the subject. More detailed research can be done on the opinions of managers in high school on guidance and psychological counseling services.
