Upton Sinclair's The Jungle in the Context of Economic and Immigration History

Year 2024, Volume: 9 Issue: 2, 127 - 131, 30.12.2024

Abstract

In the minds of researchers and readers, historical data becomes more meaningful and understandable when examined alongside novels that portray the period. In this study, Upton Siclair's The Jungle is examined through the lens of migration movements to the United States in 19th century, shedding light on the migration wave of that time. This novel, about the migration of a Lithuanian family, is analyzed in terms of plots and characters as well as what information it contains about migration and economic history. The economic sectors described in the novel and statistical data provided will be compared with migration comission reports of that period to understand how accurately they reflect the realities of the time.

Year 2024, Volume: 9 Issue: 2, 127 - 131, 30.12.2024
