The Role of Kelb Trıbe in Muawiya b. Abu Sufyan’s Political Decisions
Abstract
Muawiya b. Abu Sufyan, supposed to be one of the Arabic geniuses is also one of the most successful politicians that history has ever witnessed. His family having political and administrational experience as a part of the leading society of the Peninsula, Quraysh; his personal skills; knowing how to take advantage of Khalifa Osman’s mild nature and his fondness of his relatives; improving cyclical strategies by observing events according to win-win principal can be listed as basic factors in his success. It is a fact that he staged a different panorama with his practices after establishing Umayyad government. Another basic factor making him successful in his ruling adventure is human factor. In this respect, he made use of both Kahtani oriented tribes that have significant power in Syria where he is the governor, especially of Kelb tribe which stands out among other Qahtani oriented tribes with its political experience, population, and military sufficiency. He also gave important distinctions to Adnani oriented Qaysi tribe within his balance policy framework against possible aggression problems. It is indisputable that the support given to Umayya family by Kelb and other tribes was mutual.
