Maske Bir Mesajdır: Farklı Dönemlerde Maskenin İletişimsel İşlevleri ve Anlamları

Abstract

Bu çalışma, maskenin tarih boyunca yalnızca bir yüzü gizleme aracı değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal, kültürel ve iletişimsel anlamların taşıyıcısı olan çok katmanlı bir sembol olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmada, Marshall McLuhan’ın “araç mesajdır” önermesinden hareketle, maske bir medya aracı olarak ele alınmış; biçimi ve bağlamı aracılığıyla mesajın anlamını dönüştüren bir iletişim nesnesi olarak incelenmiştir. Araştırma, karşılaştırmalı tarihsel analiz, göstergebilimsel çözümleme ve tematik analiz yöntemleriyle yapılandırılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, maskenin farklı tarihsel dönemlerdeki işlevleri beş başlık altında değerlendirilmiştir. Bu başlıklar: Antik tiyatro maskeleri, savaş maskeleri, Guy Fawkes-Anonymous örneği, pandemi maskeleri ve dijital maskeler olarak sıralanmıştır. Çalışmada, antik tiyatro maskelerinde kimliğin sahnelenmesi; savaş maskelerinde korku, güç ve kimlik performansının görünür hale gelişi; Guy Fawkes maskesinde politik direnişin sembolleşmesi; pandemi maskelerinde biyopolitik denetim ve dayanışma; dijital maskelerde ise kimliğin sanal yeniden üretimi tartışılmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları, maskenin her dönemde iletişimsel bir arayüz işlevi gördüğünü göstermektedir. Maske, yalnızca yüzü gizleyen bir nesne değil, aynı zamanda kimliği, toplumsal düzeni ve anlamın üretimini biçimlendiren bir medya biçimidir. Tarih boyunca değişen biçimlerine rağmen, maskenin temel işlevleri; iletişimi dönüştürme, kimliği yeniden kurma ve anlamı görünür kılma olarak sabit kalmıştır.

A Mask is a Message: The Communicative Functions and Meanings of Masks in Different Periods

Abstract

This study reveals that the mask is not merely a tool for concealing the face throughout history, but also a multi-layered symbol that carries social, cultural, and communicative meanings. Drawing on Marshall McLuhan's proposition that “the medium is the message,” the study approaches the mask as a media tool, examining it as a communicative object that transforms the meaning of the message through its form and context. The research is structured using comparative historical analysis, semiotic analysis, and thematic analysis methods. Accordingly, the functions of masks in different historical periods are evaluated under five headings. These titles are: ancient theater masks, war masks, the Guy Fawkes-Anonymous example, pandemic masks and digital masks. The study discusses the staging of identity in ancient theater masks; the visibility of fear, power, and identity performance in war masks; the symbolization of political resistance in the Guy Fawkes mask; biopolitical control and solidarity in pandemic masks; and the virtual reproduction of identity in digital masks. The findings of the study show that the mask has served as a communicative interface in every period. The mask is not merely an object that conceals the face, but also a form of media that shapes identity, social order, and the production of meaning. Despite its changing forms throughout history, the mask's fundamental functions have remained constant: transforming communication, reconstituting identity, and making meaning visible.
