Creation of a New Art Music from The Folk Music Resources: Béla Bartók

Abstract

Is it possible to create a new art music based on the resources of a society, that has a rich, multicultural music heritage? What are the possible methods and principles to be followed in order to achieve this goal? The composer and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók, was looking for the answers of all these questions. Related with this issue, Bartók began his research on the subject of Turkish folk music sources. He made a field trip to Turkey, in the year of 1936, collecting phonograph records of some authentic folk songs. The results of this research were combined with the framework of his own aesthetic view in his compositions, which had remarkable contributions to the contemporary music world. These works have opened new horizons for the composers and musicologist of the first generation Turkish musicians of the republic period. This article, investigates the synthesis of folk music and contemporary art music in the context of Béla Bartók's aesthetic view, hence his intellectual principles and methods are discussed.
