Comparison of High School Students' Participation in Preschool Education in Terms of Family Capital Types

Abstract

This study aims to examine the preschool education participation of students in secondary education institutions within the framework of Bourdieu’s capital types. For this purpose, data were collected from 417 9th-grade students attending various types of upper-secondary schools (Science High School, Social Sciences High School, Anatolian High School, Imam Hatip High School, Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, and private high schools) in the Menteşe district of Muğla province during the 2020-2021 academic year. Descriptive statistics and Categorical Principal Component Analysis (CATPCA) were employed to analyze the research data. The results indicated a statistically significant difference in the cultural and social capital indicators of the participants regarding their preschool education participation. Within the scope of the research, cultural capital is shaped by factors such as the family's educational level, reading habits, and participation in artistic activities, while social capital comprises the family's social networks and interactions. The significant divergence observed in cultural and social capital highlights the critical role of a family's cultural background and social connections in preschool enrollment. Conversely, no statistically significant difference was found between the participants' preschool education status in terms of symbolic and economic capital indicators. While economic capital generally relates to material assets and income, and symbolic capital to status and prestige, the lack of significant differentiation suggests that these two capital types were not as decisive as cultural and social capital in determining preschool participation for this sample group. In conclusion, the study reveals that economic incentives alone are insufficient for expanding preschool education, and strategies aimed at enhancing families' cultural and social capital are essential.

Lise Öğrencilerinin Okulöncesi Eğitime Katılımlarının Ailelerinin Sermaye Türleri Açısından Karşılaştırılması

Abstract

Bu araştırma ortaöğretim kurumlarında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin okulöncesi eğitime katılım durumlarını Bourdieu’nun sermaye türleri kapsamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda 2020-2021 eğitim yılında Muğla ili Menteşe ilçesi farklı türdeki ortaöğretim okullarında (Fen Lisesi, Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi, Anadolu Lisesi, İmam Hatip Lisesi, Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi ve özel lisede) öğrenim gören 9. sınıftan 417 öğrenciden veri toplanmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde betimsel istatistiklerden ve Kategorik Temel Bileşen Analizinden (KTBA) yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre katılımcıların kültürel ve sosyal sermaye göstergelerinin okulöncesi eğitime katılım durumlarına göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmuştur. Araştırma bulgularında elde edilen kültürel ve sosyal sermayeye ilişkin anlamlı farklılık, okulöncesi eğitime katılımda ailenin kültürel donanımının ve sosyal bağlantılarının önemini göstermektedir. Buna karşın katılımcıların sembolik ve ekonomik sermaye göstergelerine göre okulöncesi eğitime katılım durumları arasında ise anlamlı bir farklılık elde edilmemiştir. Araştırma kapsamında ekonomik sermaye, genel olarak maddi varlıklar ve gelir düzeyiyle ile, sembolik sermaye ise statü ve prestijle ilgilidir. Araştırma bulgularında elde edilen farklılığın anlamlı düzeyde olmaması, iki sermaye türünün okulöncesi eğitime katılımı belirleme noktasında diğer sermaye türleri kadar etkili olmadığını göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak mevcut araştırma okulöncesi eğitimin yaygınlaştırılması için sadece ekonomik teşviklerin yeterli olmadığını, ailelerin kültürel ve sosyal sermayelerini artırıcı stratejilerin de geliştirilmesi gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır.
