Abdulhak Hamit Tarhan's Re-Holding on to the Life in His Book Hacle within the Antagonism of the Romanticism Movement

Abstract

This study discussed Abdulhak Hamit’s re-holding on to the life back from the pessimism that he had fallen into after losing his wife Fatma Hanim, by using his work Hacle and the romanticism movement. Born in 1852, Abdulhak Hamit Tarhan found himself in a society divided into two. After losing his beloved Fatma Hanim, he carried the dilemma that he experienced outside in real terms, now to his inner world. The poet, faltering between hope and despair, life and death, existence and absence, devoted himself to art and revealed the pain that he faced due to his wife's illness first and then her death in his books titled Bunlar Odur, Makber, Olu and Hacle under the influence of romanticism. Hamit also contributed to the thematic enrichment of the Turkish literature by using metaphysics and philosophy in the world of poetry. Discussed in the study; Hacle centers upon Abdulhak Hamit’s transition from negative to positive. In the work which was published in 1886, the poet experiences a conflict between makber and hacle. At the end of the work, hacle symbolizing rebirth outstrips from this conflict.
