The Expenditure Analysis of University Students: The Case of Manisa-Salihli
Abstract
The universities have a high potential to change the socio-economic and cultural structure of the place where they are founded. Especially the expenditures of university students and the crowd that comes with the university have a positive effect on the development of the economy of the city where the university is located. The purpose of this study analysis of spending in the education of students at Manisa Celal Bayar University Salihli Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Vocational School and investigate the contribution to the economy of Salihli. Questionnaire application and document scanning techniques were used as data collection method for the study. The research population consisted of 1650 students, research sampling are 750 students which was chosen by simple random sampling in the 2019-2020 academic year. When the expenditure items are examined, the most expenditure is shelter, electricity/ water/ fuel and outside in food/ beverage; it was concluded that they spent less on the habit of going to concerts and theater and reading magazines. In the data analysis of the research, descriptive statistics were used. As a result of the study, considering that students' average spending per capita is 1.479,19 TL in one academic year, the economic contribution of this spending to Salihli can be 19.525,308 TL. This value was summed up with the total budget expenditures of higher education institutions and it was concluded that higher education institutions contributed 26.329.785 TL directly statics to the economy of Salihli. Short-term and long-term stimulated income effects arising from direnct income effects were determined as 60.400.526,79 and 87.757.173,405 TL respectively.
