“Volk” and “Volkspoesie” (people and folk poetry) as concepts of identity and literary distinction in the works of Grimm, Arnim and BrentanoThe subject of this article is the work of two disputatious pairs of siblings: on the one hand the collection of songs and poetry Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, on the other hand the Kinder und Hausmärchen by the Brothers Grimm. After initial cooperations, conflicts between the two parties arose due to different philosophical approaches. The article focuses on the concept of “Volk” and shows how the positioning in the literary field correlates with the choice of genre and connects to the existing tradition of “Volkspoesie” especially as established by Johann Gottfried Herder.
