The aim of this article is to put out the general view of studies of vegetation geography of Turkey, based on unpublished studies up until today. The first studies about Turkey flora is comprised of flora lists prepared during botanical vacations by such foreign botanists as Piton de Tournefort, Sibthorp, Aucher Eloy, Kotschy, Edmont Boissier which dates back to 1700s. In the second phase Handel Manzetti, Krause, Schwarz, Czeczolt, H. Birand, Mattfeld, Web, Wenzel and Turill’s studies are more then of flora lists, their investigations ıncluded the vegetation of different regions of turkey. At the same time, studies belonging to Louis, Regel, Walter, Davis and Inandık presents the general aspects the vegetation of turkey. The third stage of the studies of the vegetation of Turkey, which begin with the PhD dissertation, assistant professor and professor studies of Dönmez and later on continued by the doctorate dissertations under the direction of Dönmez, are the regional vegetation studies at the academic level. With the help of these dissertations, the vegetation of Marmara, Blacksea, Aegean and West Mediterranean regions have been completed in detail. In all these studies 34 new plant species have been found which were not mentioned in the literature on that days
Bu makale, Türkiye bitki örtüsüyle ilgili bugüne kadar yapılmış ve çoğunun yayınlanmadığı çalışmaları tanıtmak amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır.
Geçmişi 1700’lere dayanan bu çalışmaların başlangıcı, Pitton de Tournefort, Sibthorp, Aucher Eloy, Kotschy, Edmont Boissier gibi yabancı araştırmacıların botanik gezilerine ait flora listelerinden ibarettir. İkinci safhada flora listelerinden daha ileri çalışmalar yapılmış, Handel Mazetti, Krause, Schwarz, Czeczott, H. Birand, Mattfeld, Web, Wenzel ve Turill, Türkiye’nin değişik bölgelerinin vejetasyonunu incelemişlerdir. Louis, Regel, Walter, Davis ve İnandık’ın eserleri, Türkiye’nin bitki coğrafyasıyla ilgili genel mahiyetteki çalışmalardır.
Türkiye bitki coğrafyası çalışmalarındaki üçüncü safha, 1960’lada Dönmez’in doktora teziyle başlayan, doçentlik ve profesörlük çalışmalarıyla sürdürülen, daha sonraki yıllarda Dönmez’in yönetiminde yapılan akademik seviyedeki doktora tezlerinin konusu olan bölgesel bitki coğrafyası çalışmalarıdır. Bu çalışmalarla Türkiye’nin Marmara, Karadeniz ve Ege bölgeleriyle Akdeniz bölgesinin batı kesiminin bitki coğrafyası bütün ayrıntılarıyla ortaya konmuştur. Türkiye bitki coğrafyasıyla ilgili bu çalışmalarda, o günlere kadar literatürde yer almayan 34 adet bitki türü ilk defa bulunmuştur.
