Abstract

Today, digital arts are moving into the boundaries of universal arts and this brings up many unanswered questions; such as how to exhibit 3D graphics or interactive works in museums and how to preserve and copyright video games. When it comes to one of the oldest of digital arts, namely pixel art, a major question still stands: What is pixel art? Used by many in many dif-ferent mediums, some pixel artists put very strict rules on what works can be called pixel art, while others simply ignore them. Can pixel art survive by itself? Do mixed techniques misrepresent pixel art? In this article, these questions that have been discussed within closed pixel art communities for several decades will be addressed. Pixel art exhibition criteria in various gallery sites and their effects will be observed under different aspects and a series of design guidelines will be presented.
