Is Gender Role a Risk Factor for Shyness?

Abstract

This research was carried out on 1045 university students to investigate the shyness levels of different genders and to examine whether the shyness levels among university students differ according to gender. Data was collected using the Bem Sex Role Inventory and Shyness Scale. In the data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test and variance analysis were conducted. The results show that most of the participants’ shyness levels were below the moderate level. In addition the shyness levels of the participants having masculine gender roles were lower than those of feminine and undifferentiated genders. In addition the study concluded that gender alone had a significant main effect on shyness level, but the common effect of gender and gender roles were not found to be significant.

Utangaçlıkta Cinsiyet Rolü Bir Risk Faktörü mü?

Abstract

Bu çalışmada cinsiyet rollerine göre utangaçlık düzeyinin farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığı ve biyolojik cinsiyetin, utangaçlık düzeyinin farklılaşmasında anlamlı katkısının olup olmadığı 1045 üniversite öğrencisi üzerinde araştırılmıştır. Veriler Utangaçlık Ölçeği ve Bem Cinsiyet Rolü Envanteri aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Analizlerde betimleyici istatistikler, t-testi ve varyans analizi kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar katılımcıların büyük çoğunluğunun utangaçlık düzeylerinin ortalamanın altında olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca erkeksi cinsiyet rolüne sahip öğrencilerin utangaçlık düzeylerinin, hem kadınsı hem de belirsiz cinsiyet rolüne sahip olanlardan; androjen cinsiyet rolüne sahip olanların utangaçlık düzeyinin ise hem kadınsı hem de belirsiz cinsiyet rolüne sahip olanlardan anlamlı biçimde daha düşük olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca, utangaçlık düzeyi üzerinde cinsiyetin tek başına anlamlı temel etkisinin olduğu, ancak cinsiyet ile cinsiyet rolünün ortak etkisinin anlamlı olmadığı belirlenmiştir.
