ALBERTO ARBASINO ELA RISCOPERTA DEL GRAND TOUR TRA POSTMODERNISMO, CLASSICISMO ED ORIENTALISMO
Abstract
In 2006, Alberto Arbasino published the book Dall'Ellade a Bisanzio was. In general, this text seems to be a report of a travel experience made in I960 by "some well-read youth" eager to escape the chaotic Olympics in Rome to reach Olympia and, finally, Istanbul. Arbasino, thus, elaborates the theme of "romantic escape" from the society of the post-war economic boom to discover places where mass tourism has not arrived yet. Yet, the Arbasino’s travelogue is not a text constructed according to the traditional rules, it is rather a collage of intertextual literary and popular references that oscillate between Classicism and Orientalism. In this framework Arbasino rewrites the typical travel writing of the Grand Tour of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth century with a postmodern approach. In particular, the fragmentariness, typical of the new travel literature, is an expression of an attempt to excite the audience in a game of references, which often obscures the real purpose of the narrative, that is, the description of the trip and its itinerary. Arbasino’s writing, therefore, can be considered a way to exorcise the sense of anguish against the global village where there is nothing to be discovered and seen.
