Sultan Mehmed II founded the first Istanbul Armenian Patriarchate in
1461. The first headquarters of Patriarchate which located in Samatya,
moved to its present location in Kumkapı in 1641. The Cathedral of Patriarchate
Surp Asdvadzadzin Church was rebuilt as a complex by Kirkor
Amira Balyan and Hacı Devlet Garabetyan in 1828. Vortvots Vorodman,
the church on the southernmost end of the complex is restorated by Istanbul
2010 European Capital of Culture Committee and Armenian community
and is named as Vortvots Vorodman Church-Mesrop Mutafyan
Cultural Centre.
