Religious Coping in Severely Ill Patients

Abstract

This article consists of a qualitative research conducted to understand the religious coping process in severely ill patients. The sample group consists of 35 patients with cancer, MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and stroke (paralysis) who were treated at Samsun Ondokuz Mayis University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. Interviews were held around four main themes: understanding and adaptation to the disease, processes that connect the patient to life, religious coping process, and the patient's expectations and wishes for life. It is a fact that the severe disease process has effects on the patients' lives, on the changes in their work and social life, on the deterioration of their psychological health, and on the weariness of the treatment process. The effect of religion in coping with such situations is also an observed reality. As a matter of fact, a love-based protective God perception was observed in 29 patients. In addition to this, it is seen in the research that patients want to return to life with a simple life expectancy by regaining their health and they face their regrets about their life’s. As a result; it is understood that the factors that religion provides directly or indirectly, such as taking refuge in God, getting strength from Him, prayer, worship, patience, family and social support, have positive effects on fighting the disease and expecting a simple and peaceful life.

Ağır Hastalarda Dini Başa Çıkma

Abstract

Bu makale, ağır hastalarda dinî başa çıkma sürecini anlamak amacıyla yapılan nitel bir araştırmadan oluşmaktadır. Kanserli, MS (Multiple Skleroz)li ve felç (inme)li hastalardan oluşan örneklem grubu, Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi’nde tedavi gören 35 hastadan oluşmaktadır. Görüşmeler, hastalığı anlamlandırma ve uyum, hastayı hayata bağlayan süreçler, dinî başa çıkma süreci, hastanın hayata dair beklenti ve istekleri şeklinde dört ana tema çevresinde yapılmıştır. Ağır hastalık sürecinin hastaların hayatlarında, iş ve sosyal hayatın değişmesi, psikolojik sağlığın bozulması ve tedavi sürecinin yıpratıcılığına dair etkiler bıraktığı yadsınamaz bir gerçektir. Bu gibi durumlarla başa çıkmada dinin etkisi de bir o kadar gözlenen bir gerçekliktir. Nitekim 29 hastada sevgi temelli koruyucu Tanrı algısı görülmüştür. Araştırmada bunun yanı sıra hastaların, sağlıklarına kavuşarak sade bir yaşam beklentisi ile hayata geri dönmek istedikleri ve eski hayatlarına dair pişmanlıklarıyla yüzleştikleri görülmektedir. Sonuç olarak; Allah’a sığınmak, O’ndan güç almak, dua, ibadet, sabır, aile ve yakın çevre desteği (sosyal destek) gibi, dinin direk ve dolaylı olarak sağlamış olduğu etkenlerin hastalıkla mücadelede ve sade ve huzurlu bir hayat beklentisi içine girmede olumlu etkileri olduğu anlaşılmıştır.
