Abstract

Investigation of Effect of Inactive Escherichia coli Vaccination on Pregnant Cattle IgG Levels in Colostrums and Calf Blood Serums

Year 2021, Volume: 6 Issue: 3, 318 - 324, 28.09.2021
https://doi.org/10.35229/jaes.886678

Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of inactive E. coli vaccine administered to pregnant cattle on immunoglobulin (Ig) G levels in colostrums and calf blood serum. For this purpose, a commercial inactive E. coli vaccine was administered to cattle at different stages of their pregnancy (last 60 and 30 days). The colostrums of vaccinated cattle and IgG levels in blood serum of calves fed with these colostrums were analyzed by ELISA. Differences in IgG levels between vaccination groups and control groups were measured and IgG values between groups were compared. When the data of the colostrum samples were examined, it was determined that the difference between the results obtained from the control group and the animals that were vaccinated with one dose and two doses was significant (p <0.001). Similarly, when the data of calf sera are evaluated; There was a significant increase in blood serum values measured in calves of cattle receiving single dose and two doses of vaccine compared to the control group (p <0.001). On the other hand, passive transfer failure (PTF) was observed in all 7 calves (100%) in the control group and in 5 (71.4%) of the 7 calves that were vaccinated with a single dose, while PTF could not be determined in any of the 7 calves that were vaccinated with two doses. Thus, a significant decrease in PTF rates was achieved in vaccinated animals. As a result, it was concluded that the immune response generated by the inactive E. coli vaccine administered to pregnant cattle was transferred to calves passively, and that two doses of vaccination on the last 60 and 30 days of pregnancy of pregnant cattle were more effective than single dose vaccination.
