Analysis of crease pattern from a regular pentagon origami regarding mathematical relationships

Abstract

Studying origami crease patterns enables insights into mathematical thinking. For this study, folding a regular pentagon from a square paper was analyzed for geometrical relationships within the underlying origami crease pattern. A regular pentagon is a five-sided figure with equal sides and equal interior angles such as 108 degrees. Diagonals form golden triangles inside a regular pentagon. The process carried here can be counted as synthetic proof (visual but not formal) hence it also gives a way to promote geometrical thinking. First, from the instructions, regular pentagon is formed through folding square paper and then geometrical relationships among concepts like sides, angles, triangles, and corners are detected and established a baseline for a synthetic proof of why it works. Here, taking half points of adjacent two sides is compulsory to build a regular pentagon otherwise it ends up a non-regular pentagon. It can be concluded from mathematical relationships.
