Assessment of Sleep Disorders and Co-Occurrence of Restless Legs Syndrome in Hemodialysis Patients
Abstract
Aim: Reports indicate that sleep disturbances diminish the quality of life in people with chronic renal failure receiving haemodialysis. This study aims to identify the demographic and biochemical parameters influencing the sleep quality of haemodialysis patients and to examine the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS).
Materials and Methods: Ninety patients from the haemodialysis unit of Kayseri Training and Research Hospital participated in the study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was utilised to assess sleep quality. The diagnosis of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) was established according to the criteria set forth by the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG). The patients’ demographic and biochemical parameters were analysed.
Results: Suboptimal sleep quality was identified in 55.6% of the patients. The prevalence of HBS was determined to be 54.4%, with 69.4% of patients with HBS experiencing poor sleep quality. A statistically significant correlation was identified between sleep quality and HBS (p=0.007). The presence of RLS was independently associated with poor sleep quality (p=0.001)
Conclusion: PSQI serves as an efficient and economical approach for assessing sleep problems in individuals undergoing haemodialysis. Sleep disturbances and restless leg syndrome dramatically impact individuals receiving haemodialysis therapy.
