Perspectives on Anglo-Turkish Diplomatic Relations: An interview with His Excellency Mr. Ümit Yalçın, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Year 2020, Volume: 1 Issue: 2, 87 - 91, 20.06.2020

Abstract

In the last issue, we published the report of the interview we held with Sir Dominick Chilcott, the British Ambassador to Turkey. In this issue, we turn to His Excellency Mr. Ümit Yalçın, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to discuss Anglo-Turkish diplomatic relations over history from the Turkish perspective. Turkish diplomatic relations with the UK has a long history. British Empire is one of the first countries which sent an Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. William Harborne, in 1583, was sent as an Ambassador to the court of Murad the Third. Yusuf Agah Effendi, who was one of the first Ambassadors of the Ottoman Empire, started to serve during the reign of George the Third in 1793. Although historically Turkey and the United Kingdom have come into conflict on occasions, bilateral relations and cooperation in the face of joint interests have always been in the forefront. And today we work in close cooperation with the United Kingdom to spread economic prosperity, stability, peace and security in different parts of the world.
