The Liquid Penetrant Inspection of Main Landing Gear Wheel of an Aircraft

Abstract

Failure(s) may be defined as the incapability of engineering components and structures to satisfactorily perform their intended function(s). Some of the failures of critical engineering components and structures may be significant and lead to serious results such as accidents. One of those critical components is aircraft main wheels. Defects may occur in service life of these components and result in failures and affect structural integrity and flight safety of aircraft. Therefore, defects should be detected effectively before they cause failure of components in their service life. These defects can be detected effectively and economically by the application of non-destructive inspection methods. Liquid penetrant inspection method, which is one of the non-destructive inspection methods, can be used effectively for detecting surface discontinuities or defects in all materials except porous ones. In this study, non-destructive inspection of main wheels of main landing gear of small aircraft was investigated by use of liquid penetrant inspection. Some corrosion damage and cracks were detected on the wheel at the end of liquid penetrant inspection.
