https://doi.org/10.18009/jcer.1409921

Abstract

Investigation of the Effect of out-of-School Learning Activities for Teaching the Subject of Waste and Recycling on Achievement, Perceptions and Opinions

Year 2024, , 184 - 208, 21.03.2024
https://doi.org/10.18009/jcer.1409921

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of out-of-school learning activities for teaching the subject of waste and recycling on success, acceptance, and views. The mixed design was adopted. 44 secondary school students participated in the study. Half of the students formed the experimental group, while the other half formed the control group. The data of the study were collected through the waste and recycling achievement test, the acceptance scale regarding out-of-school learning environments, and interview questions regarding out-of-school learning environments. Study findings indicate that out-of-school learning activities increased students' success and perceptions of on waste and recycling. From the interviews, it was understood that students' considering out-of-school learning environments as a powerful tool in science teaching. For this reason, it is recommended to give more space to out-of-school learning environments that provide on-site, free and experience-based learning opportunities, taking into account subject compatibility and student expectations.
