Intertextual Thinking Reflections in the 6th Grade Turkish Coursebook Prepared in the Context of the Türkiye Century Education Model

Abstract

Intertextual theory, which is based on the idea that texts have influenced one another and have been passed down to the present day, is an approach that examines the relationships a literary text establishes with other texts. In language education, it is important for students to recognize these types of relationships so that they can interpret texts from a multidimensional and critical perspective. In this context, examining the texts included in Turkish textbooks in terms of intertextual relationships has the potential to contribute to the development of students’ reading, comprehension, and interpretation skills. The purpose of this study is to reveal the reflections of intertextual thinking in the texts found in 6th-grade Turkish textbooks prepared within the framework of the Turkey Century Education Model. The document analysis design, one of the qualitative research models, was used in this study. Accordingly, the texts in the textbook were carefully examined, sections bearing traces of intertextual relationships were identified, and these were analyzed using sample sentences. Coşkun Ögeyik’s classification of intertextual relationships was taken into account during the analysis process. The results of the study indicate that the 6th-grade Turkish language textbook incorporates elements of intertextual thinking, and that these elements help students build bridges of meaning between different texts. It has been observed that intertextual theory is used effectively, particularly in the transmission of national and cultural values, and that cultural continuity is supported by establishing an intellectual link between the past and the present.
