Content Analysis of Picture Story Books for Hospitals: A Document Review for Children Aged 3-6

Abstract

This study aims to reveal how medical personnel, medical equipment and procedures, symptoms, information about illness, accompanying persons, and recovery processes are addressed in hospital-themed picture books published for preschool children (ages 3-6). The study was conducted using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. A total of 23 books were examined within the scope of the research. To collect the data for the study, the researchers conducted a literature review and created a “Hospital Story Book Review Form.” To increase the reliability of the form, opinions were sought from three experts, and the final version of the form was created. This form covers the general characteristics of the book (author, publisher, year of publication) and items related to the hospital theme. Among medical instruments, stethoscopes, thermometers, and needles/syringes were most frequently depicted in the books. Furthermore, while the healing process was explicitly described in most books, it was determined that this process was not depicted at all in ten books. Recommendations for researchers and families were provided based on the study results.
