An Analysis of the 2nd-Grade Turkish Textbook Developed under the “Century of Türkiye” Education Model in terms of the Values it Contains
Abstract
The starting point of values education is the family, and this education continues at school. In schools, textbooks are one of the primary tools in the transmission of the values. In this study, the frequency of values in the texts of the second 2nd-grade Turkish textbook prepared according to the "Century of Türkiye Education Model" and their distribution across themes were analysed within the framework of Virtue-Value-Action. The main objective of this research is to analyse the texts in the second primary school 2nd-grade Turkish textbook prepared for the Maarif model in terms of the values they contain. Document analysis was used in the study. The material consists of 16 reading texts found in the second volume of the 2nd-grade Turkish textbook taught in the 2025-2026 academic year. The obtained data were subjected to descriptive analysis. According to the findings of the research, a total of 17 values were used 179 times. It was found that these values are; patriotism (27), industriousness (23), respect (20), love (18), responsibility (15), helpfulness (15), friendship (11), aesthetics (9), patience (9), freedom (7), compassion (6), humility (5), family integrity (5), sensitivity (4), frugality (2), healthy living (2), and justice (1). In conclusion, it was observed that values such as "patriotism" and "industriousness" came to the fore in the analysed texts. However, values such as "justice", "healthy living", and "frugality" remained quite limited. It is recommended that values show a more balanced distribution in newly prepared textbooks and that text diversity be increased for values that are underrepresented.
